Makoto Nakano
Born in 1968, raised in Kitamiyama, Miyama Town, Kyoto (an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings).
At the age of 22, he visited the UK and was deeply impressed by the abundance of thatched roofs throughout Europe.
In April 1992, he became an apprentice under three master thatchers, then only three in number: the late Yuuichi Nonomura, the late Tatsunosuke Yamazaki (both recognized as Kyoto Prefecture’s “Modern Masters”), and the late Shuichi Yamauchi (also a Kyoto Prefecture “Modern Master”).
Due to their advanced age, he also trained with neighboring town’s thatchers, the late Takuichi Kuno and the late Etsuji Yamagata.
After five years of apprenticeship, he completed an additional year of “thank-you apprenticeship” (a traditional practice).
Later, he trained under the late Yoshiyuki Nagasaki (a nationally designated preservation craftsman) at Akashi Roof Construction Co., Ltd. in Okayama Prefecture.
He also studied with Takuzo Sumida (a nationally designated preservation craftsman) in Nara Prefecture and Masamitsu Tanaka.
He is dedicated to preserving thatching across Japan and promoting Japanese thatching techniques worldwide. He is also actively involved in passing on the craft to the next generation by training young thatchers.
