Thatch Roofs and Snow: A Landscape Woven by Two Forces of Nature

The scenery created by snow and thatched roofs evokes a calm feeling, as if time itself has slowed to a peaceful flow.

When a thatched roof is dusted with snow, its curves are even more pronounced, and despite the harsh cold, it radiates a sense of warmth. Gazing upon this view stirs within us a deep responsibility—to preserve this landscape for future generations.

With each snowfall, the thatched roof’s appearance changes. As spring arrives and the snow melts away, the roof’s true form reemerges. This cycle feels like a story woven by the snow and the thatch together.

However, to protect thatched roofs over the long term, simply watching is not enough. Before the roof bears too much weight, the snow must be carefully removed. We thatchers take great care to thatch the roofs in ways that minimize snow accumulation, but there are limits. Therefore, rather than resisting nature’s power, we believe it is essential to coexist with it.

Life under a thatched roof can be harsh at times, yet also gentle—teaching us the importance of living in harmony with nature. The landscape woven by thatched roofs and snow symbolizes not only beauty but also our deep connection to culture, life, and the natural world. Moving forward, we will continue to reflect on what we can do to protect and pass on this precious scene, dedicating ourselves to this cause every day.
