 Staff Comment

The Kobayashi Residence was originally a village headman’s home, and its large, stately roof reflected that heritage.
Each side of the building had a different roof shape due to its relationship with the attached lower roofs and the roji-mon (garden gate), requiring a wide range of detailed thatching elements. Particular attention was paid to water drainage and joinery. Notable features include the stepped transition between the Ōma and gable (shinogi), and the distinctive eaves over the reconstructed ridge — both characteristic of Miyama-style thatching.

I learned that the previous re-thatching was carried out by our master, and subsequent repairs had involved several of our predecessors. Knowing I had the opportunity to contribute to this roof, which has been cared for across generations, gave me a deep sense of responsibility, as well as appreciation for the skills and intentions passed down over time.

The thatch removed during dismantling was repurposed by the homeowner as fertilizer for their fields, offering a beautiful example of the traditional cycle of use that defines kayabuki culture.

It was also a special time because of the spring holidays — not only the homeowners, but their grandchildren and great-grandchildren were able to watch the work being done. I feel truly honored to have played a small role in preserving this home, cherished by generations. I hope to continue my work with the same care and intention in every project to come.
