Living with Thatch

Although our company specializes in thatched roof construction, many of our team members value a lifestyle in harmony with nature. Through this series, we hope to share how we live each day in pursuit of passing on the thatching tradition to future generations.

Yoshitane Obata― 1st Year with the Company

Mr. Obata balances dual careers in music and thatching. He formed a band with the daughter of Master Thatcher Nakano (current Chairman), and through this connection, he was introduced to the world of thatching.Visiting Miyama for music video shoots and staying in houses with thatched roofs, he gradually became captivated by the charm of thatching.

Ayumi Shiozawa ― 3 Years with the Company

Ms. Shiozawa, an administrative staff member, is married to a thatcher who works mainly in Kyoto and Kobe.

Her mother’s family home was originally a traditional thatched-roof house, and she had heard stories about thatching from her mother since childhood. However, her genuine interest began during her student days studying architecture, when she participated in a thatching workshop.

Masayuki Kobayashi — 13 Years with the Company

Mr. Masayuki Kobayashi was born and raised in Miyama Town.

The main house where he grew up is now covered with a corrugated metal roof, but originally it had a traditional thatched roof. Though there were inconveniences such as leaks, even as a child he felt a mysterious charm in the quietness inside the house, the coolness of summer, and the strength of living close to nature. Now as an adult, he treasures the memories of spending time with family in the large rooms unique to old folk houses.
